Skillogalee Basket Pressed ‘The Cabernets’ 2017 from Clare Valley SA
Very bright, generous nose on this one. Lovely smile inducing ripe fruit on the nose. Bit of cassis and pierced blackberry skin. On the palate holy moly – mega weighty, sweet fruit, almost port like quality. Needs air/decanting for sure. It’s presenting like it’s super premium – if it were you’d be excited. It’s old school premium hyper extracted cabernet. Hint of mint / herbaceousness on the back palate as it opens, also the acid comes in and makes it feel a bit less concentrated. It’s good. Good balance of herbaceousness, dark berries, coffee. Rounding into an old school savory cabernet. Fresh pour and it’s all freshness. Real classy cabernet. I’m impressed. But still on the fence. Tobacco coming through too.
It’s good but maybe not amazingly complex. You’d be happy but I think it’s a NO
Seriously has merit though, just not going to be a crowd pleaser.
