Pierre-Marie Chermette Les Griottes Beaujolais 2020 (Gamay)
Lovely vibrant, bright colour in the glass. On the nose – super typical – generous candied fruit, loud, inviting, ripe, man it’s making me smile!
On the palate just gorgeous! Perfect structure, super soft playful tannins, popping ripe berries. Sensational example. We have our first Beaujolais! (Gamay Noir) Fun fact: Basically if it’s from Burgundy (Bourgogne) if it’s red its Pinot Noir and if it’s white it’s Chardonnay. Beaujolais is the exception (on the red side) it’s down the bottom of the region and the reds are made from Gamay Noir. (the other white is a lean varietal called Aligoté)
There’s a value proposition here – you see the best Burgundy Pinot Noir’s go for thousands upon thousands of dollars where as the very best Beaujolais caps out much cheaper and seriously excellent examples can be found even around $100.
Anyway back to the wine in hand. Seriously how delicious is this!? So many smashed ripe berries, so vibrant, so alive! They call this a great picnic wine (no arguments here). Just make sure you have good glasses because there's so much complexity to enjoy here.
