Chapoutier Esteban Sparkling Viognier 2018
Lean and precise on the nose, still with some stone fruit coming through.
On the palate – somewhat difficult to interpret – would make more sense as a chardonnay but the viognier makes you think of a bone dry cider in a way – a special one though. Very aperitif style – salt water dry bubbles, great acid, lean clean with bubbly peaches and nectarines. The more I sip it the more I like it! Though slightly caught off guard, even though I knew it was viognier to begin with. It’s definitely not without merit but I don’t know if it’s a WOW for this vintage.
