Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2020 from Kumeu, New Zealand (North Island)
This winery is known as New Zealand's premier Chardonnay producer. The premium offerings usually compared to great white burgundy.
Lovely light straw colour. Really elegant, restrained nose – whisper of lemon and a hint of oak. On the palate generous and full – all really up front on the flavour profile – nothing is hiding here. Lots of oaky richness throughout the palate with good texture and acid contrast throughout. Oh man after a couple minutes the whole palate comes together – now we’ve got this gorgeous dance between the thickness of the butter that was dominating when I first opened and this lovely vibrant and fresh citrus flowing throughout – stunning – amazing quality wine.
Real power behind this one – it’ll age. Probably the wrong time to drink, decant for an hour if you can fit the decanter in the fridge or just swirl enthusiastically (it's a baby).
